Conservation and Restoration Service

Conservação e Restauro

The Conservation and Restoration service of the National Railway Museum has functioned since 2008 having been created at the time of the inauguration of the Locomotive Roundhouse in June of that year, to cater for the need to maintain exhibition rolling stock in this area in good condition.
From 2009 the service has had at its disposal a senior technician in Conservation and Restoration who, amongst other functions, coordinates a team of 5 people in a wide variety of tasks in their charge, from the conservation and restoration of diverse objects to the maintenance of rolling stock.

The staff of the Conservation and Restoration service have acquired  technical skills and experience in the area of the conservation and restoration of railway heritage along these more than three years, many times supported by people specializing in the railway sector. In 2010 the team participated in the restoration of the Royal Train. For 2011 it is expected that diverse material will be restored for display in the two buildings that are actually in works, the restoration of a wagon, amongst others. In the coming years we have the challenge of recuperating diverse vehicles that will be integrated into the permanent exhibition of the museum
