On August 3, 1882, the first railway link connecting Portugal to the rest of Europe was inaugurated: the Beira-Alta Line.
This line, connecting Figueira da Foz to Vilar Formoso, is of great importance to both the country and Europe, as it embodies the direct link between the Atlantic and the center of the Iberian Peninsula. It is against this backdrop that the edition now being published by In-Libris takes on special significance, coinciding with the year (2025) scheduled for the full reopening of the line.
We present a facsimile edition of an important and rare album of original photographs from the era (19th century) by photographer Emílio Biel—an artist whose work offers us a clear view today of the country we were in the 19th century.

The text accompanying the publication of this album, authored by Manuel de Novaes Cabral, provides a historical context for the construction of this facility, which was so important to the country's development.
