The general impression is that Portugal has serious shortcomings in terms of rail transport.
There are many areas in the country where the train doesn't reach, and others where it does, but only a few times a day and with a journey that is far too long to reach the destination. The trains are old, not to say outdated, they are not always clean and are frequently delayed.
At a time when the construction of the first section of High-Speed Rail in Portugal is underway, we have the opportunity to restructure the rail network. High-Speed Rail has brought about this qualitative change in all countries where it has emerged, and the structural choices regarding the configuration of this new network have already been largely made.
If the automobile and the airplane dictated the decline of long-distance rail transport, the emergence of high-speed rail has once again made the train competitive with both. A Railway Plan for Portugal examines the past, present, and future of the railway and aims to contribute to a debate that has been going on for several decades.
